I was lying in an inn's bed that evening, almost on the verge of getting some sleep for once despite what I knew was happening to Elaine in a nearby room, when I realized what had struck me as strange.

According to Elaine, nobody in her country knew why it could possibly be, that even if farmers produced one hundred times as much grain, there would still be poverty.

But if nobody knew a reason for the Equilibrium to be like that, then why believe it was like that in the first place?

Therefore Elaine had just implied that in her own country, farmers could already produce one hundred times as much grain, and the outcome had already been seen.

You would not expect this to be an obscure country. I've been taught that farmers are the ultimate backbone of a country's military strength. A country whose farms are one hundred times more bountiful should dominate the world as the keystone of a vast Empire, with merchant caravans and ships sent out in every direction beyond. There shouldn't be any noble in the world who doesn't know of them.

And yet I've never heard of a country like that, so isn't Elaine misleading me? No, more than that, isn't the concept something out of a fairy story?

I've never heard of a country like that.

Just like I've never heard of any people with rounded, beastlike ears.
